Alexander Müller is currently the study leader of the project on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity Agriculture and Food (TEEB AgFood), which is hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). He is also a member of the German Council for Sustainable Development. From 2001 to 2005, Alexander was State-Secretary in the German Ministry for Food and Agriculture. From 2006 to 2013, he served as Assistant Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. He headed the Department for Natural Resources and the Environment, which works on issues like land and water, climate change, genetic resources for food and agriculture, and international agricultural research. In this position, he was also the chair of UN Water and UN Energy for a number of years. From 2013 to 2015, Alexander served as a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), working on the governance of sustainability, with a focus on soils and their role in the water-food-energy nexus.
