Prof. Dr. Klaus Töpfer is a Honorary Senior Fellow and Executive Director Emeritus of the Institute for Advanced Sustainable Studies (IASS) in Potsdam. He founded the IASS in 2009 and was Executive Director until September 2015. From 1987 to 1998 Klaus Töpfer was the German Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and of Regional Planning, Building and Urban Development. From 1998 - 2006 he held the position of Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi and was Under-Secretary General of the United Nations.
